Above is Arnside as shown on William Yates' map of Lancashire, published in 1786, impressively detailed for a place outside the map's county boundary.
Below, however, is the equivalent map of Westmorland, by Thomas Jeffery, published in 1770. Bizarrely, the Arnside area does not merely lack detail, much of the detail which is provided (most obviously the two streams converging at Far Arnside) is fictitious. It looks as if, at the time of surveying, both cartographers assumed that the county boundary ran down Leighton Beck to the sea, only to discover later, when they began adding administrative boundaries from official documents, that they had been wrong.
