FROM THE DALZELL FAMILY ALBUM
Tom Dalzell followed his essay on Braystones Beach in the 1930s and 40s with a further email containing several more photographs of the period, showing various beach bungalows. As you can see below, they're both evocative and informative:
Tom Dalzell senior with baby Tommy on Latona steps, 1936 [with apologies for the deterioration of this old photo]. Some decades later, the toddler comments: "Evidently that summer, I spent my time crawling backwards and forward on Latona's wooden veranda and my mother spent her time taking spells out of my knees. Latona will always be part of me!" |
From the same year, 1936, the picture above shows the view north along the beach from 'Latona' (seen at far right). Click here for an enlargement of the other bungalows. At right is young Tommy again, still playing in the sand. |
The little shop on the beach below the railway station at Braystones, in 1937. |
Here's Mrs Dalzell etc. outside Miss Davidson's bungalow, 'Plas Isa' in 1943; Tom is second from left in the dark pullover. The picture below was taken a few yards away on the same day. | |
