MANSFIELD REFERENCES IN 17TH CENTURY QUARTER SESSIONS

        An index by David J.Bradbury

The main index covers references from 1603 to 1642. An appendix lists selected references from the post-Civil War period.

The Sessions referred to were those held at the Shire Hall, Nottingham, unless otherwise stated
Dates are converted from regnal years to A.D., with new year Jan 1.
Note that in many cases the original minutes used dittos to repeat descriptions of people or offences: it is possible that these were sometimes used over-enthusiastically, and hence that some information here may be false.
Also, because this index is based on a translated abstract, not on the original Minutes, it relies entirely on the original editor's accuracy in interpreting the handwriting and in translating the Latin and legal jargon. Even first names were often Latinised (and surnames were spelled in many different ways: I have noted the major oddities).
For the reasons outlined above, readers are advised, if they find an entry of interest in this index, to re-check it with the original Minutes at the Nottinghamshire Archives.

..RATES: Order that assessment should be made according to the old custom of assessing actual wealth, rather than land, 5 Oct 1635
..Further review of assessment method. Recent change had given rise to "inequality of assessment", but arguments had been produced both for and against the method. The court orders a new impartial assessment of the houses, land, tenements and personal standing of everyone to be taxed, to be shown to the justices at their next monthly meeting. Until then, the last assessment made is to remain in force. It is emphasised that there is no intention to "exonerate" the land of some people, as had been supposed. 11 Jan 1636
