INDEX OF MANSFIELD ENTRIES IN LOCAL QUAKER REGISTERS, to 1837

WITH ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON SUFFERINGS, to 1798

An abstract by David J.Bradbury

The following index lists all people listed as born, married, died or buried at Mansfield, from the composite registers for Notts. & Derbyshire, compiled from original records after national civil registration was introduced in 1837. The Notts. Archives copies of these are: Births, NR/Q463(K); Marriages, NR/Q464(K); Deaths/Burials, NR/Q465(K). Further entries have been supplied from the register notes kept by parish clerk John Lodes between 1699 & 1717. One or two marriages of Mansfield people elsewhere in the 18th century have also been added from local newspapers (as collected & indexed in my series "Mansfield in the News").
Information on Sufferings has been taken from the official list (Notts. Archives NR/Q30) which covers the period 1710 to 1798 for Mansfield, and from P.J.Cropper's "Sufferings of the Quakers in Notts, 1649-1689".
Much more biographical information is available, particularly in the Minute Books of the Mansfield Monthly Meeting (also at Notts. Archives), but this is merely an attempt to provide a basic guide to the local Quaker families.

Dates before 1752 use the Old Style, though following the standard Quaker practice of using numbers for months instead of names (with March as month 1).

GAPS IN COVERAGE

The coverage of the early registers is obviously incomplete, many people for example being buried without first having been born. There can be various reasons for this: inefficiency at the time, loss before 1837, conversion from another faith etc. It should also be noted that a careful comparison of this index with the registers would probably reveal numerous people who were born elsewhere and migrated to Mansfield.
There is no information on sufferings for some years, notably 1729-31, 1733-34, 1745-54, most of the 1760's (possibly due to tithe demands being relaxed), 1776-79, 1781-93, 1795-6.
The various Sutton in Ashfield Friends who were buried at Mansfield after the 1770's are omitted.

SYMBOLS & ABBREVIATIONS

M = Mansfield     Mw = Mansfield Woodhouse    dau = daughter

Two methods have been used to distinguish people with the same names: usually snr & jnr for two generations; 1, 2 etc to indicate people of the same generation with the same name (very common where children died young and names were re-used).

Information in brackets usually refers to parts of people's lives spent outside Mansfield (except that brackets are also used to indicate alternative spellings of names, all of which have been normalised for this index).

FROST, THOMAS. The Quaker registers and John Lodes' notes give contradictory information regarding the family of Thomas Frost. They almost agree over his daughter REBECCA, born 30.4.1704 (or 1 Oct 1704 in Lodes). Lodes gives the marriage of Thomas Frost & ELIZABETH DAWS at Mansfield, 25 Dec 1703, then the Quaker registers list the children of Thomas & Elizabeth as ROSE or "ROSSEMAN" (27.12.1707/8), HANNAH (11.8.1714) and THOMAS jnr (24.11.1717/8). Lodes, however, lists the children of Thomas as ELIZABETH jnr (22 Jan 1705/6), ANN (6 Dec 1707), MARY (28 May 1709), THOMAS jnr (27 Apr 1712) and REBECCAH (18 Dec 1717). This last entry gives Thomas's occupation as shoemaker. Quite possibly the Quaker Thomas did not live within the town, and Lodes' Thomas was a Presbyterian!
