- 1808 Jan 23: Nottingham-M turnpike trustees, resolutions of meeting Jan 18 at Nottingham "considering the very bad State of the Road" and the great expense of repairing and maintaining it: "It is expedient there shall be taken at the first Gate the present Toll, and at the second Gate half a Toll in addition to the present Toll." "Double the Amount of the Tolls be taken at each Gate on a Sunday". As the cost of repairing the road within Nottingham itself will be greater than the cost of repairing all the rest, it is to be proposed to the Corporation & Town of Nottingham that they contribute £50 per year in addition to the statute duty. If they refuse, then the turnpike will be deemed to begin only at the Carpenters Arms pub. As the Treasures has at present only £52/16/11 in hand, and a large sum is required for renewal of the Act, £2000 should be borrowed on security of the tolls, in addition to the existing debt of £3600. To avoid future disputes, the M terminus of the road shall be defined as by the Cock pub. Next meeting to be Feb 1 at Nottingham. All interested in the road are asked to attend.
