- 1810 Dec 14 NR: "To Philanthropiana: a Parody" (i.e. of the previous week's poem) by "Philanthropos" of M:
When the firm friend of uninstructed youth,
The advocate of liberty and truth,
Exposeth error to the public eye,
In hopes to guide the hand of charity;
When he detects th'absurd, uncouth design,
Yet shews where beauties intermingled shine;
The philanthropic soul, that still pursues
The poor man's good, e'en now exulting views,
Amid the gloom which darkens life's low vale,
Chill penury's sons the dawn of wisdom hail,
Grateful the sacred pages learn to trace,
And shew the plan of wisdom, and of grace.
Shall one, who steppeth forth as friend of Truth,
Some fair example to the rising youth,
With hot anticipation's bigot tongue,
Outrage the guardian of the rising throng?
Shall he, with rancour, enmity and spleen,
Boldly condemn before a word is seen?
And dare to fabricate th'ungen'rous line,
Ere yet is known the good or ill design?
May better thoughts his erring mind amend,
The Friend of Truth will be Discussion's Friend.
