The Midland Gazette, based at Sutton in Ashfield, first emerged in 1846 as a monthly publication. It contained mostly national news, like all papers of the time, and lasted only until 1848. I have given an indication of the Mansfield material it contains in the first few dozen entries below.
Most of this page, however, is dedicated to Mansfield material from the revived, weekly Midland Gazette in 1857. I have not given items in detail, merely indicated the theme to help researchers find their way through the original.
There is also a tiny coda, a few items from the early months of Mansfield's first newspaper, the Reporter, in 1858.

- 1857 May 2: The old bath house near Mr R.Hardwick's residence in Bath Lane has been demolished. In digging out the foundations, remains of a skittle-ground were discovered. An old man named Angliss, who died four years ago, used to say that a public house was attached to the bath around the 1760's to 1770's- at that time there was also apparently a tan-yard near the bridge by Sheep-wash Pool at the bottom of Bath Lane.

- 1857 May 9: A fire in a house in Queen Street was discovered just in time to prevent serious damage.
- 1857 May 9: A boy was injured while climbing over a gate in White Hart Croft.
- 1857 May 9: Sale of various properties in M, including a shop in Albert Street, fronting the Market Place, occupied by David Woolhouse.
- 1857 May 9: Mr Ash, photographer, has taken a stereo view of a quarry in Rock Valley; he has opened a photographic gallery in the Market Place.
- 1857 May 9: A railway pointsman was injured between two carriages at M Station.
- 1857 May 23: Buxton & Heane, drapers of M, seek an apprentice.
- 1857 May 23: Details of the business of John Pratt, auctioneer, house agent etc.
- 1857 May 30: Report of the fitting of a window at St. John's Church, in memory of the late James Greenhalgh.
- 1857 May 30: M "has once more established a cricket club", called Sherwood Forest C.C., and based at the Green Dragon.
- 1857 Jun 6: Businesses were closed on Whit Monday, and meetings were held by the various lodges of Oddfellows: the "Minerva" at the Crown & Anchor, the "Berry Hill" at the Greyhound, the "Druids" at the Eclipse on West Gate, the "Sherwood No. 52" at the Royal Oak; also the Waggon & Coals Sick Club, the Nag's Head Sick Society and the Railway Inn Friendly Society.
- 1857 Jun 6: A Mormon stole money from M Woodhouse Oddfellows' Lodge to pay for the journey to Salt Lake City, but he was arrested on board ship in the Mersey.
- 1857 Jun 20: A drunkard fell down some steps at the Swan Inn, and died, possibly from apoplexy.
- 1857 Jul 4: Report of a fire in a cottage on Chesterfield Road; "one of the town engines arrived as speedily as possible, considering that it had to 'travel on three wheels'".
- 1857 Jul 11: The Fair day was rainy (the paper carries a report on sales).
- 1857 Jul 11: There will be a firework display after the Races.
- 1857 Jul 11; The gardens of the almshouses on Bull's Head Lane have been robbed.
- 1857 Jul 18: Mr & Mrs Maltby's Bridge Street Academy re-opens on Jul 20.

- 1857 Jul 18 (Jul 13): Reports on M Races: the Trial Stakes, the Portland Stakes, the Sherwood Stakes, the Town Plate, and the Broxtowe Stakes.
- 1857 Jul 18: Reports on the various Sunday School summer treats: the Church school went to the old High Oakham barracks, the Independents to the pleasure-ground of Broom House Asylum, while the Wesleyan Methodists had an excursion to Grimsby (others are listed, but not detailed).
- 1857 Jul 25: Report of an accident while re-roofing and re-fronting the premises of Messrs. Watson & Wright on West Gate, "among the oldest buildings in the parish".
- 1857 Aug 1: Advert for W.H. Jolly, watchmaker etc. of 96 Leeming Street.
- 1857 Aug 1: Advert for Robert Andrews, small-ware dealer, of 126 Stockwell Gate.
- 1857 Aug 1: Report of a death following an argument- verdict, manslaughter.
- 1857 Aug 1: Report of the theft of crockery from a summer-house on Bath Lane.
- 1857 Aug 1: Bilberries are plentiful in Harlow Wood etc., but due to the official Inclosure of the forest lands a few years ago, the townsfolk can no longer pick them at will.
- 1857 Aug 1: A man was killed in a sand fall at the quarry by the cemetery.
- 1857 Aug 15: The Lady Brook overflowed into a walled enclosure on Ladybrook Lane during a thunder-shower. When the wall gave way, a 3-foot wave rushed down West Gate, causing mail-coach horses to bolt (one has had to be put down) and flooding several houses. There is no predcedent for the occurrence. Also, the embankment of the railway line from M to Nottingham was swept away near Sutton, but trains were stopped in time.
- 1857 Aug 22: A floor collapsed at the Meadow Foundry.
- 1857 Aug 29: Advert for Henry Prior, slater of Clerkson Street.
- 1857 Aug 29: The M Infants' School is short of funds.
- 1857 Sep 5: Sale of rams in the Beast Market at M, by R. White.
- 1857 Sep 5: A horse and coal cart from the Wharf ran down Albert Street into the window of Daniel Green's shoe shop- the horse survived. The same window suffered a similar accident about 30 months ago.
- 1857 Sep 12: Advert for W.E. Pegg's china & glass warehouse on Church Street.
- 1857 Sep 19: An inquest was held at the Lord Byron pub, following a drowning in the pond of Greenhalgh's Mill. On the same day, 700 Greenhalgh's employees were enjoying their summer treat in the pleasure grounds at Car Bank.
