Birkby [based on Whitehaven Record Office documents D/Stan/2/1-5]

Jul-Sep 1566 (via a series of tranactions to overcome legal obstacles) Thomas Stanley Esq. of London acquired the manor of Birkby, plus lands there and in Muncaster, Millom, Bootle & Waberthwaite, and fishing rights in the River Esk, from John Vaughan of Estrike, Yorks., and his wife Lady Ann Knewytt, daughter & sole heir of Sir Christopher Pickering (whose family had held the manor since at least 1415), for £760.
