Descriptive text

BIRKER AND AUSTHWAITE

Is a civil parish containing 1,414 acres of enclosed land, and about 7,000 acres of mountains and common. It is assessed at £583... It lies within Bootle ward, petty sessional division, union, and rural district; the county court district of Millom; and the electoral division of Muncaster.
Iron ore is found here and worked by the South Cumberland Iron Co.
...an heiress carried it to Nicholas Stanley, in whose family it remained until 1888 when it was purchased by Lord Muncaster, who is the present lord of the manor. The other landowners are- W.B. Benson, Towers Tyson, John Hird, Dixon Sharpe, the Trustees of John Vicars, and a few others.

CARLETON (extracts from DRIGG entry)

In 1723 a school was erected by subscription at Carleton, and in 1727 it was endowed by Joseph Walker with £260. The school was free to the children of those who had been contributary to its erection, with the exception of a small annual gratuity at Shrovetide, locally known as Cockpenny. Through bad management and other causes this endowment dwindled into insignificance, and the premises have been sold and converted into a cottage.

ESKDALE AND WASDALE

Form a joint civil parish in Bootle ward, petty sessional division, poor law union, and rural district, the county court district of Whitehaven, and the county council electoral division of Muncaster, containing the chapelries of Eskdale and Wasdale Head. The rateable value is about £2,128...
The manor of Eskdale... The rights and privileges of the manor are possessed by Lord Leconfield. The following are also landowners: Edward Tyson, Dixon Sharpe, R. Sharpe, J. Hird, W. Hird, Towers Tyson, E. Sharpe, J. Tyson, and several others.
The Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway was opened in 1876, and has stations at Boot; Beckfoot, and Eskdale Green.
The parish possesses a bobbin manufactory, a hoop and basket factory, and a corn mill. The latter is in the village of Boot and has been in active operation for over 200 years. The motive power of the mill is the water of Whillan Beck, which, a short distance above this spot, flows among and over rocks, forming a very pretty waterfall. Eskdale Green and Boot are villages in this parish.
The Fell Dales Association was established about thirty-four years ago for the purpose of improving the Herdwick or heath-going stock of sheep. The annual show is held at the Wool Pack Inn, in the month of September.
Eskdale Chapel... The building has lost much of its ancient appearance by a partial restoration effected in 1881, at a cost of £750; a new vestry was added, and the interior greatly improved. All the windows are now filled with stained glass, beautiful alike in design and colouring. An old window, representing St. Catherine and a wheel, the instrument of her martyrdom, has been removed from the wall, and is now preserved at the vicarage. A well, contiguous to the church, still retains the name of St. Catherine's well. The pulpit is of oak, erected to the memory of Horatio Nelson Creeny in 1898. The benefice, a perpetual curacy, worth £65, is now held by the Rev. Richard Herbert Snape. Formerly, the parishioners exercised the right of presentation to the living, but the patronage has now for some time been invested in the Stanleys, of Ponsonby. For the convenience of the people of Eskdale Green, a new mission church, with day school, dedicated to St. Bega, was erected and opened in 1890, at a cost of £2,000, raised by subscription. It has seating accommodation for 120. The Wesleyan Chapel, erected here in 1849, was enlarged and improved in 1890 at an outlay of £300.
The High school, near the village of Boot, which dates from 1863, has accomodation for 100 scholars, and is attended by about 84 children, The Low school, at the Green, has room for 100 pupils.
CHARITIES- There is attached to the chapelry a poor stock, amounting to £107 4s 9d, the interest of which, £2 l9s, is applied to the poor just after the 31st March each year. The interest of £137 has been left by several donors for the education of the poor of Eskdale, and the interest of a further sum of £400 is divided on the first Sunday after Easter, among the poor who have not received parochial relief during the year. A small endowment of land produces £5 2s. yearly, which is applied to the Higb school.
The late John Vicars, Esq., in 1889, bequeathed the sum of £200 to the school. The interest is applied in rewards for attendance and progress.

ESKMEALS (extracts from BOOTLE entry)

...remarkable for its large rabbit warren.
...the seat and property of the Misses Falcon.

IRTON (extracts from IRTON WITH SANTON entry)

[the Irton family estates]: From the Exors. of the late Jonas Lindow-Burns-Lindow the estates were purchased by Thomas Brocklebank, Esq., in 1896, in whose possession they have since remained.
School- Henry Caddy left by will, in 1716, £150 towards the maintenance of a master, who should teach the children of those parishioners only who contributed to the erection of a school on Irton Moor. The interest arising from endowments, together with voluntary subscriptions, amounts to £30 a year. In 1872, William Birkett, of Hewrigg, Irton, gave the sum of £100, the interest of which is added to the school funds.

MUNCASTER

...is situated in Bootle ward and petty sessional division; the county court district of Whitehaven; the deanery of Gosforth; and the union and rural district of Millom. Muncaster gives its name to a division for the election of a member of the county council. The parish comprises the two townships of Muncaster and Birkby, whose united area is 6,495 acres, which are assessed at £4,290.
A vein of iron is supposed to exist at a place called Brankenwalls Gill...
Muncaster Castle... A new billiard room was added in 1886. The castle contains one of the finest libraries in the North of England.
In 1880 the revenues of the church were further augmented by £3,000, contributed by Lord Muncaster and the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. The benefice is worth £202, and is in the incumbency of the Rev. Canon H. Bell, who is also rural dean, and chaplain to Lord Muncaster.
The School (mixed) has accommodation for 150, and an average attendance of 60. Master, William M. Birkett.
Ravenglass ... the fair is now obsolete, and the market little more than a name.
There is a Public Hall built in the Swiss style, with a residence at each end. It was erected at the sole expense of Lord Muncaster, and is used during the week as an Infant School, and on Sunday evenings for religious purposes. The number of names on the books at present is 32. Mistress Miss, M.B. Dickinson. A Reading Room was established in 1862. The premises were enlarged in 1898 at the expense of Lord Muncaster, and a billiard-table added, the gift of Miss Ramsden.
The Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway... was opened September 16, 1876, and is the shortest registered railway in Great Britain.
Walls is the name given to a mansion built by Lord Muncaster in 1885 ...it is the residence of the Earl and the Countess of Erroll.
Newtown, another fine mansion, is the residence of Lady Harriet L'Estrange, the mother of Lady Muncaster.
There were formerly several CHARITIES attached to this parish. They are now all lost with the exception of £20, the interest of which is distributed among the poor at Easter.

WABERTHWAITE

The area of the parish is 1,050 acres, the rateable value £933... The principal landowners are Lord Muncaster, William Hodgkin, Edith Pritt, J.B. Postlethwaite, John Pritt, John Caddy, S. Nicholson etc.
The present Rector is the Rev. John Harrrison, L.Th. (Durham). The Rectory is in the parish of Muncaster. It was purchased in 1894, half the money being raised by subscription; the rest was a grant from the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. There is a small school for Waberthwaite and Corney, capable of accommodating 80 children.
CHARITY [Ancient poor stock £100 inc. £80 from Rev Mr Park of Barton, Norfolk. Interest, £1/5/- distributed annually. Parish also shares in a bequest of Lord Muncaster]
