ESKDALE POOR STOCK LOANS

The oldest surviving account book of St. Catherine's chapel in Eskdale [Whitehaven Record Office, ref. YPR 4/14] contains some rather chaotic records of loans from the chapel's "poor stock", the interest payments from which were donated annually to the needy poor. Here I have attempted to arrange the loan information in chronological order.

MEMO:
"Agnes Sharp spinster of Hollinghead in Eskdale gave seven pounds to the Chapel of Eskdale, for the use of the Minister for ever. She died August 30 1741 and was paid accordingly August 8th 1742"

"Then Edward Stanley Esq. paid into the hands of the Chapellwardens of Eskdale the sum of one hundred Pounds Left by his late Grandfather Edward Stanley of Dailgarth Esq. as a Legacie Left in and by his last Will and Testament. The yearly Interest for the Minister of the Chappell of Eskdale aforesaid."
