ESKDALE IN HARRIET MARTINEAU'S
LAKELAND DIRECTORY, 1860
These directory entries from the second edition of Harriet Martineau's "A Complete Guide to the English Lakes" (published by John Garnett, Windermere, 1860) originally appeared in two alphabetical lists of names, for Eskdale and for Birker with Austhwaite (the coastal area was not covered), but I have followed my usual practice and organised them by trade in a single sequence, with Birker/Austhwaite residents marked [B].
The postal town for the area was Whitehaven.
