Millom ironworks, Cumbria, UK

Summer 1968, shortly after closure

My father had heard about the closure of the ironworks and iron-ore mine at Millom, and during a Lake District holiday he took me to see the site. It was deserted, except for a caretaker in the main office building. He told us something of the history of the complex, and showed us some memorabilia, including the world's first Spray Steel ingot. Having a good head for risk assessment, he also allowed us to go and look at the works, with the result you see here. Follow this link for more pictures of the ironworks, and Hodbarrow iron-ore mine.
