GREENLAND IN THE
DIPLOMATARIUM NORWEGICUM
AFTER 1364

This is an attempt to list all documents in the online Diplomatarium Norwegicum dealing with Greenland after the apparent return of Ivar Bardarson to Norway in 1364. It will be observed that most are documents from the Papal authorities concerning the appointment and privileges of Bishops of Gardar, none of whom after Bishop Alf seem ever to have set foot in their diocese!
#00 Watch out for Grenland
In the Middle Ages, when spelling was far from precise, there was a tendency to spell the Norwegian and Latin versions of the names Greenland (that huge island in the Atlantic) and Grenland (an odd bit of Telemark on the Norwegian mainland) the same way. For example these two documents almost certainly refer to the latter:
Diplomatarium Norwegicum Bind 15 nr 29 (dated 1374)
Diplomatarium Norwegicum Bind 1 nr 444 (dated 1377)
#01 The names of the diocese
Although the ecclesiastical diocese on Greenland was usually named after the Bishop's seat of Gardar, there were occasions when it was simply called the "Diocese of Greenland", as in these two earlier church documents:
